The course is run over 5 full days at Easter, June and October mid term break. You must have submitted the pre requisite certs as follows:
- Age 17 or within 6 months of reaching 17. No outer limit!
- Dinghy Instructor Pre-entry Certificate
- Have completed 2 or more of the advanced modules: Advanced boat handling, Adventure, Go Racing, Adventure
- National Powerboat Certificate + 20 hours driving on Check klick logbook
- Safeguarding 1: via any Sport Ireland body
- Garda vetted: via Irish Sailing, download application from their website..
- 1st Aid Certificate
- Dinghy sailing Check klick logbook up to date
- VHF cert (not compulsory for the course but essential for working afloat)

Objective | You will be trained and prepared for the role of the Dinghy Instructor - which is to deliver (teach) Start Sailing, Basic Skills and Improving Skills within the ISA Small Boat Sailing Scheme. The course at SailCork is run by ISA dinghy trainer Eddie English, whose aim is to make the course both informative and enjoyable. |
Location | SailCork's base at East Ferry near Cobh in Cork Harbour, with waters suitable for sailing in all weather. Full facilities including a chartroom for briefings, changing rooms and easy access to the water for dinghies. We offer transport from Cobh train station to the Marina for a small fee. We also offer a great package for accommodation in a family home, meals and transport. |
What to bring | Your personal sailing gear, suitable for dinghy sailing in all conditions. Buoyancy aid. Notebook and pen. Whistle and knife. Books including RYA Dinghy Instructor Handbook G14, RYA Dinghy Sailing Advanced Handbook G12, RYA Start Sailing G3,. All books available in SailCork office. |

Syllabus | KNOWLEDGE OF SPORT: Role of National Governing Body, Role of ISA Training Centres, Knowledge of ISA Small Boat Sailing Scheme, Role of Coaching Ireland. PERSONAL SKILLS: Sailing skills and knowledge, VHF radio communications, Emergency care. ENVIROMENT: Weather, Tides & currents, Development of environmental interest in participants, Protecting the environment. INSTRUCTION STYLE, VALUES & ETHICS: The instructor, Learning styles & teaching methods, Ethics, Working with children, Inclusion. INSTRUCTION SKILLS: Delivering skills based sessions, Delivering knowledge based sessions, Course programming, Delivering on the water skills sessions, Delivering on shore skills and knowledge sessions, Use of appropriate tasks and exercises, Group management, Managing resources, Assessment - standards and methods, Delivering feedback. SAFETY: Risk assessment, Risk management, Use of safety boats, Action in the event of an emergency. COMMUNICATION: with participants, with other instructors.
