East Ferry, Cobh, Co. Cork

Our main base is located at East Ferry Marina at East Ferry on the eastern end of the Great Island in Cork Harbour.

We are just over 3 miles from the historic town of Cobh in East Cork. Our island location is ideal for training as we have sheltered waters at all times with easy access to the vast waters of Cork Harbour and the South Coast of Ireland and Atlantic Ocean.

Cork Harbour is an amazing location for watersports. It is the second largest natural harbour in the world (after Sydney Harbour in Australia). Sailing as a sport has been carried on in our sailing waters for over 300 years – since the late 1600’s – we are part of an amazing tradition. Cork City is located in the north western corner of the harbour and is located nearly 15 nautical miles (26k) from the open sea – the Atlantic Ocean. Cork is a very vibrant city and has excellent marina facilities.

;Ballinacurra is located some 13 nautical miles (24k) to the east of Cork and is 10 nautical miles (18k) from the sea. It is right next to Midleton – where they make Irish Whiskey. Ballinacurra was the home of topsail schooners and the old quays still provide a welcome, the Owenacurra flows from here past East Ferry to enter the sea. The village of Aghada is situated in the south eastern corner of the Harbour with the sailing village of Crosshaven to the south west with Carrigaline further up the Owenabue River. The Harbour runs some 8 nautical miles (13k) from west to east passing the town of Cobh sitting on the Great Island in the centre of the Harbour looking out on the historical islands of Spike and Haulbowline.

The setting of East Ferry Marina is very rural and we are bounded by the beautiful Marlogue Woods to the south, the estuary of the Owenacurra river to the east and farmland to the west and north. The view across the water to the east is of East Ferry Church set in a wooded hill on the Midleton side of East Ferry. We have full facilities on site including our chartroom and changing rooms. The site is also home to the Marlogue Inn – you can sit on the verandah, watching the action afloat, whilst enjoying a drink and a mouthwatering meal.

Our shorebase is at East Ferry Marina Cobh. The Marlogue Inn is in the same complex. We are right next door to the beautiful Marlogue Woods which are open to the public. NB we are NOT AT EAST FERRY MIDLETON we are at EAST FERRY COBH!! Although East Ferry got its name from the old ferry that ran there there is NO LONGER A PUBLIC FERRY at East Ferry! During the summer months, however, SailCork can sometimes provide a collection service from East Ferry Midleton to bring pupils across the river to our base on the Cobh side. (Call our office on 021 4811237 for details.

There is plenty of parking at East Ferry Marina and we have a slipway for launching dinghies and powerboats and an old stone pier as well as the modern marina. Pupils bringing their own boats should contact us with regard to their storage at East Ferry Marina.

Crosshaven, View Royal Cork Yacht Club

CROSSHAVEN Co. Cork (Navigation Courses) and a number of other courses are run from the Royal Cork Yacht Club. To get to Crosshaven from Cork City take the Carrigaline road from Douglas. Proceed through Carrigaline and on to Crosshaven. The RCYC is at the entrance to the village of Crosshaven on your left hand side. There is plenty of parking outside the club. The first building is the Dinghy Centre (on the left of the gate) and then there is the main clubhouse building on the right – the door is at the far end. Check to see where in the RCYC the course will be running. Lunch is available in the club for day long courses.

Baltimore, Baltimore Sailing Club

Our Powerboat Courses in Baltimore are run from Baltimore Sailing Club. Baltimore is situated just 6 miles beyond Skibbereen in South West Cork. The Sailing Club is in the village- it is a single story building on the harbour front. There is car parking nearby.

We also run Cruiser Courses from Baltimore mainly during “Calves Week”. We are usually berthed at the Marina but new crews join in the friendly surroundings of Bushes Bar overlooking the harbour.
