The “in” place to cruise is now Croatia in the Adriatic. Dubrovnik is only 3 hours from Dublin and less from London and the marina is only forty minutes from the airport. With gentle breezes and a balmy 24 degrees lat September is the best time to sail in Croatia. No fighting for berths at the marina and a more settled weather pattern.

Map of Croatia

There is a wide choice of charter boats and holidays available there and marina facilities are excellent. Many smaller destinations do not have marinas but there is plenty of depth to moor stern to on to the quay wall just in front of the local taverns! The local beer and wine is excellent and less expensive than Ireland. The food is top class too with fresh harvest from the fields and the sea.
The Croats are a friendly people and the scars of the recent conflict are not evident. They LOVE the Irish – similar population size and history  – and they do have a sense of humour! The sense of history is all around and this is very evident in Dubrovnik – the pearl of the Adriatic.

SailCork have been running a “Croatian Sunshine Cruise ” since 2006 (along with Sunshine Sailing in the Caribbean, the Canaries, Spain and Morocco). We provide a top of the range boat (this year a 53' Jeanneau), an experienced skipper (Eddie English is a Yachtmaster Instructor and has sailed these waters for many years) and together with hostess Jo English they look after the provisioning and planning for a great holiday. Learning is an option too! You can just sit back and relax or choose to advance your sailing skills under the expert eye of the skipper.

Our boat is a beautiful Jeanneau 53 with 5 guest cabins. She is a modern, powerful design with lean, clean lines and sails wonderfully. There is plenty of room aboard and she is a joy to sail.

This year SailCork are using Dubrovnik as our base. The shoreside facilities are excellent – with a swimming pool and restaurants and bars. The marina is just 10 minutes from the old city – all in all the perfect place to start and end a holiday. Dubrovnik is a UNESCO listed city and has an amazing history which is very evident in the streets and buildings. It was a very powerful city state at one time and the merchants who ruled the city built it to last!  We will spend our last night in Dubrovnik.

SUNDAY: Those flying in from Dublin arrive at Dubrovnik Airport at 11:45 (taxi booked under name of SailCork for 7)and all the crew will meet at 13:00 at Restaurant Bazen (the restaurant by the swimming pool) at the ACI marina Dubrovnik. You can sit and relax with a beer or go for a dip while we ensure that the boat is ready with all the correct equipment and get provisions for the boat.

We hope to depart Dubrovnik as soon as the boat is provisioned and the crew have had their briefing and sail past the beautiful Elaphite Islands on our way to Saplurana on the south east conrner of the island of Mljet where we hope to moor just off the restaurant – and even swim ashore! We hope to eat in the excellent “Stermesi” where Adrijan and his family will look after us. The islands have a relaxed pace of life and the food is really excellent!  (Dubrovnik – Saplurana on Mljet  Distance: 18M)

MONDAY: From Saplurana we will sail along the unspoilt west coast of the island of Mljet and cross to the more isolated island of Lastavo which sees far less tourists than other islands. We will anchor in a beautiful bay for the evening with a chance to relax and explore ashore.  We may even see some of Tito's secret bunkers for his naval vessels from the Cold War. (Saplurana on Mljet to island of Lastavo. Distance 42M)

TUESDAY: After an early start on Tuesday morning we sail past the island of Korcula on our way to the island of Hvar – our destination being the beautiful historic town of Hvar where we will tie up in the town centre and get an opportunity to climb the hill and see the amazing view from the fortress on the hill. (Lastavo to Hvar  Distance 36M)

WEDNESDAY: From Hvar we will head southeast to the historic walled town of Korcula on the island of the same name where we will get a chance to explore the ancient streets of the town where Marco Polo was born. We hope to eat in the traditional restaurant “MarcoPolo” in the evening after exploring the town. (Hvar to Korcula   Distance: 32M)

THURSDAY: We have a shorter passage across to the island of MLJET and the small town of Pomena. Here we will more stern to the restaurant – we will be just a few metres from our table!! We hope to visit the very special lake on the island which is just a short walk from Pomena.   (Korcula to Pomena on Mljet  Distance: 15M)

FRIDAY: We sail down the Mljet Channel (to the north east of the island) and head up the valley to the historic town of Ston with its famous walls. We will cross the peninsula to eat at the famous Kaptenova Kuca in Mali Ston where we will eat in style! (Pomena to Ston   Distance: 27M)

SATURDAY: For our last day afloat we will sail through the beautiful Elphati Islands stopping for a breakfast swim before returning to explore the amazing city of Dubrovnik and have our final night at an excellent restaurant.  (Ston to Dubrovnik  Distance: 23M)
